Mid-Game Meltdown costs Penguins !

Penguins got their home league campaign off to a disappointing start, being blanked 0-5 against the visiting Solent Amazons on Sunday evening but the game was all about converting chances as the Amazons nailed 5 from 25 but the Penguins 0 from five more shots than their opponents.

The girls got off to a slow start with goals conceded at 2:04 and 10:34 before warming to the challenge and outshooting the Amazons throughout the rest of the game. Having built and established momentum, Penguins suffered a mid-game meltdown which gifted Amazons three goals in less than two minutes just after the midpoint. After a clearing of the heads back on the bench, Penguins returned to taking the game to Amazons but lacked the finishing touches needed to beat Kiara-Mai Merrell in the visitors goal.

Stacie Horn deservedly picked up the Spirit of the Game award for her hard working two way game.

Our Penguins correspondent Tom Parker put the loss down to a slow start and a failure in transitional play and finishing, “it was a bit of a slow start again leading to letting a couple slip in before we warmed up and got into the game. After that, it was a bit of a meltdown letting in three in quick succession after which we banged heads together and became much more focused in the second half of the game where we really did put the pressure on them. Unfortunately, their netminder proved to be a brick wall but, in fairness, our shooting came up short too with too many shots being fired into her pads and we’ll need to put some serious work in to improve that.

Our work in the offensive zone was pretty solid when we had the puck up there but our transitional play from D out to F wasn’t up to scratch which stopped us pinning them back as much as we should. Still plenty of positives to build on. The girls are playing in a much more organised style ….. we just need to develop the finishing to take advantage”.

The girls are back in action at Slough in two weeks time and then have a long wait to a return fixture with the Slough Sirens back at Bretton on Saturday 10th November, face-off 6:25pm.
