This Week in Peterborough Hockey History

“In 2005, in a Phantoms home EPL Cup victory over Telford Wild Foxes, Doug McEwen chalked up his 1000th goal in UK hockey”

5th March

In 1983, Pirates were slaughtered on home ice by the touring Don Mills Comets who went on to lose only one tour game to the Nottingham Canadian All-Stars which was basically every decent Canadian in UK hockey including all of Pirates imports ….. well we couldn’t let them tour unbeaten could we !!!

6th March

1997 saw a decent old-skool battle at Bretton as the Medway Bears edged out the Pirates by 11-12 !

7th March

On this day in 1987, Pirates trounced the Crowtree Chiefs (based in Sunderland) by a tidy 22-3 but an altogether sadder day in 1993 as referee Mick Curry was tragically killed in a car crash on the A1 after officiating at the Pirates 9-3 home win over Humberside Seahawks

In 2005, in a Phantoms home EPL Cup victory over Telford Wild Foxes, Doug McEwen chalked up his 1000th goal in UK hockey …… that is some achievement !

8th March

1994 saw Pirates 1991 Wembley Finalists take on the Pirates All Stars in a special challenge game billed as “a celebration of the rink staying open” …… and why not !

9th March

Pirates played three fixtures on this date in 1986, 1991 and 1997, all at Bretton and all ending in thumping defeats but then they were against Dundee Rockets, Durham Wasps and Guildford Flames respectively !

Phantoms did little better with only one win from four games on this date, a 4-3 win over Chelmsford Chieftains in 2008

10th March

In 1998, Pirates thumped Cardiff Rage 17-4 so seems a good date for scoring goals …… to be continued this weekend ?

Phantoms have only ever played one game on this date and that was in 2007 when they beat Swindon at home by 4-3

11th March

It was on this date in 1984 that popular import D-man Rob Carnegie played his final game for Phantoms in a 12-0 home win over Richmond Flyers in front of 1,215 fans. Rob took a match penalty and that was a match penalty too many for the club owners !

1998 saw the biggest home shut out in Peterborough hockey history as the Pirates thumped Lancashire Hawks 18-0 in a play-off game !
