This Week in Peterborough Hockey History

“The second leg of the 2003 EPL Cup Final against MK Lightning took place on this date and in front of a huge and very noisy crowd at Bretton, Phantoms clawed back a two goal deficit to win on the night 5-2 and take the title”

2nd April

The first leg of a Relegation Play-Off game against Telford Tigers took place on this day in 1988 in Telford and it didn’t start too well with Tigers racing into an 8-4 lead but the Pirates battled back to win 12-14 (6-3, 3-6, 3-5) !

Phantoms have only played three games on this date, all play-off games, all defeats and including a 1-4 semi-final defeat to Guildford Flames at Coventry in 2016

3rd April

A controversial date in the 2011 play-offs as Phantoms looked to overturn a 2-4 home defeat to Slough to make Coventry and they took it to overtime at the Hangar with a 2-0 win. The game winning goal came from Tom Carlon after Darius Lelenas illegally passed the puck by hand to set Carlon up in front ….. Jets fans never did forget that one !

4th April

2015 saw the game you’ll never see again ….. sadly. Coventry semi-finals and the favourites, Telford Tigers, are beaten 4-2 by a superb Phantoms performance. Tigers owner later refuses to allow the DVD of the game to be released. One day maybe !

5th April

1987 saw a fixture that may be repeated for the first time in 31 years next season ….. Pirates beating the Oxford City Stars at Bretton by 10-8

In 2003, Phantoms travelled to face rivals MK Lightning in the first leg of the EPL Cup Final and came away with a 2-4 defeat but on a far more memorable night in 2015, Phantoms took on and beat Manchester Phoenix at Coventry to win the Play-Off Championship

6th April

A huge night at Bretton in 1991 when Pirates took on the country’s #1 team Durham Wasps in a Play-Off group game and pulled off a shock 9-7 victory on their way to making Wembley

The second leg of the 2003 EPL Cup Final against MK Lightning took place on this date and in front of a huge and very noisy crowd at Bretton, Phantoms clawed back a two goal deficit to win on the night 5-2 and take the trophy

7th April

In 1984, Pirates beat Nottingham Panthers 6-5 in a challenge game with Panthers featuring recently gassed Pirates import D-man Rob Carnegie

An amazing night in 1993 when the fledgling Sheffield Steelers came to Bretton for a Promotion/Relegation Play-Off game which they won 8-12 in front of an estimated 1,000 travelling fans which also included a brass band !

A nice omen as Phantoms will be at Coventry on 7th April 2018, Phantoms have never lost on this date ….. having won their two games, both play-off games in 2007 and 2012 !

8th April

Another omen for this date and not such a good one ….. Phantoms have never won on this date, having played two play-off games in 2007 and 2012 and losing them both !
