Phantoms 2 Beaten in Season Opener

Phantoms NIHL2 went straight into league action tonight against the team that finished one place below them in last season’s league table but it was visitors Guildford Phoenix who got the jump start with a 2-5 road win.

The opening period was dominated by Phantoms who, aided by a string of penalties on Phoenix, served up a 12-2 SOG advantage but ended the period with nothing to show at 0-0. Further Phoenix penalties were punished in the middle period by powerplay markers from Conor Pollard and Shaun Yardley but they conceded two goals to standout Phoenix forward Bailey Wootton and a shorthanded goal from Andrew Hemmings to trail 2-3 going into the final period.

The scoreline remained unchanged through to the last six minutes when a string of four back to back minor calls served up nearly seven minutes of powerplay for the visitors which allowed them to finish off Phantoms with two more goals from Wootton.

Phantoms will be back in league action next Saturday with a trip down to Lee Valley for a 5:30pm face-off.
