Penguins opened their WD1 league campaign with a daunting trip down to Oxford to play a Midnight Stars side that put 17 goals past them at Bretton towards the end of last season but there was to be no repeat tonight in a game where the Penguins outshot their opponents 27-20.
The opening period finished 2-0 to Oxford but Penguins kept it tight, only conceding six shots on goal. Period two saw the home side extend to 5-0 by the 35 minute mark but then Leah De Mar struck a deserved goal for Penguins assisted by Charlotte Fox. Stars took it back to 6-1 at the second break but Penguins were in no mood to roll over and came straight out in the third to take another goal back through Clare Ledbury who struck unassisted on a 5on3 play.
Penguins poured it on in the final period, racking up an impressive 13-8 SOG advantage but couldn’t claw any more back and the game ran out 6-2 in Stars favour …… a huge improvement on the scoreline from the last time the two sides met !
Penguins will make their season’s debut at Bretton next Sunday when Solent Amazons are the visitors for a 6:25pm face-off.
