Penguins come up short in Solent

With just ten skaters and a netminder, Penguins faced a real daunting task at the end of their long haul trip down to Solent tonight.

With just under five minutes on the clock a crude slash from Amazons Ellie Cole saw Penguins captain Clare Ledbury stepping up for a chat resulting in both players taking roughing minors with Cole assessed an additional minor for the original slash. Penguins grabbed their chance with the extra player as Georgia Whittemore fired Penguins ahead, assisted by Sharon Khan at 7:44.

The Amazons dominated the remainder of the period with netminder Steph Owen having to face 15 shots on goal but it took until one minute before the break for the home side to break through with a goal from Julie Saint.

With the huge advantage in extra skaters, Amazons loaded another 18 shots on Owen in the second period but again they only breached her defences once with a 36th minute marker from Jessica Leslie.

The final period saw Penguins short bench battling to tie the scores but a 15-5 shots advantage for the Amazons backing up an early strike from Liz Taylor for 3-1 proved too much to overcome.

Penguins were due back on home ice next Saturday for a clash with league leaders Basingstoke but that game has now been scratched to make way for Phantoms NIHL1 play-off home tie with Milton Keynes.
