Fans Survey 2018 – The Team, The NIHL, The Future

The average hockey game ?

Conclusions ?

More than 67% believe the games are less entertaining, 44% believe they are a lot less entertaining. Interesting is the near 9% who believe it is more entertaining than last season but that is very likely to include those who are new fans this season and who have nothing to compare the games with.

Very few will be surprised by this one and most will see it as something we can do little about. However, we do need to do something otherwise we will lose fans which will, in turn, lessen our product and things can start to spiral down.

With no alternative to the NIHL, do we need to step back and re-invent ourselves ? Does being “too good” for this league mean that we lose the fundamentals of an entertaining product and thus lose fans as a result ? Do we just need to promote it better ? Can you actually promote this level of hockey with any likely success ?

How would you best describe our/your first experience of NIHL hockey ?

Conclusions ?

This one is interesting. A mixed bag of opinions but when viewed with the results to the previous question then it more than hints that the drop in game entertainment isn’t solely to do with the league we are playing in !

How entertaining are Phantoms themselves ?

Conclusions ?

Around 70% of those who still attend games find Phantoms hockey variable or “pretty boring” so by no means an overwhelming thumbs up …… but is that down to the league we find ourselves in or does our style of play come into it ? Do we have enough characters out there who fans identify with ? Is there enough in-game interaction between players and fans ? Is there an evident and visible passion within the team that fans can identify with and respond to ?

How would you sum up your confidence in the immediate future of Phantoms hockey ?

Conclusions ?

More than half of those attending games are unsure or concerned about the future of the club as things stand. Such negativity tends to flatten spirits which in turn flattens the atmosphere which then makes for a less attractive game night so it is an area that needs to be addressed. Does the fanbase need some uplifting and positive communication(s) on the future in order to raise spirits ?

POSITIVE – If the club could do ONE thing that YOU believe would put more bums on seats, it would be …….

These will all be forwarded on to the club. A few examples include ……….

  • get a character in to pump the crowd up during game
  • actively promote and raise hockey profile everywhere in Peterborough but especially where the young people go … so pubs, clubs, college, other sports clubs … make hockey cool again. It isn’t at the moment !
  • Sunday home games
  • more Peterborough players
  • “early bird” offer/better season ticket deals for fans that buy them year after year
  • physical hockey
  • high tempo hockey
  • make it easier for new fans to get details of match nights from the website. Have spoken to several new fans over the season who found it hard to get details of when/who we were next playing and also as part of what competition
  • more promotion to the right age groups! Not primary school ages but College and secondary school ages
  • be more open
  • on-ice characters

NEGATIVE – If the club could remove ONE thing that YOU believe puts fans off from attending, it would be ……..

  • Saturday games
  • young people are ‘out out’ on a Saturday. Sunday is better as not much else to do. It’s an early enough finish for kids too !
  • lack of loyalty to life long fans
  • certain players that have NO interest and never seem to put the effort into games
  • parking costs
  • dirty toilets
  • loud music in warm up
  • state of the rink
  • poor / misleading / absence of information on the official website
  • the cold !

Thank you to those who took time to complete this survey !

Full survey results will be passed on to the club.
